Embracing freedom or being a free spirit isn’t always a romantic journey of rebellion against external forces. It’s an inner battle that rages within us—a relentless tug-of-war between our innate need for boundless exploration and the harsh reality of surrendering to rules and restrictions for the sake of our well-being and the success of our relationships.

The Challenges of a Free-Spirited Nature

Picture yourself at your desk, day after day, feeling trapped and suffocated by the routine. Your mind wanders, imagining a different life, a life where you’re with someone who isn’t your partner. You involuntarily replay the moments you’ve shared, something they’ve said, the way they looked at you. Against your will without thinking you find yourself smiling. But then guilt sets in, and you wonder why you can’t be satisfied with what you have. You bury these feelings deep, fearing judgment and hurting the person you love.

Or how about this: You’re at work, and your curiosity pulls you towards topics that excite you, even if they’re unrelated to your job. You dive into research, exploring new ideas that ignite your passion. But fear creeps in. You worry that you’re neglecting your responsibilities and that your colleagues will notice. Paranoia sets in, making you question your abilities and fearing the consequences of neglecting your work, even if it’s for just an hour.

Guilt, fear, and paranoia intertwine, leaving you torn between your desires and the expectations of others. You hate the inner conflict, trying to hide your yearnings behind the facade of going through the motions. But they persist, a constant reminder of the life you secretly crave.

Navigating Longing and Duty

It’s a struggle, a delicate balancing act between longing and duty. You fear judgment and disappointing those who love and trust you. The weight of conformity weighs heavily, threatening to crush every ounce of your freedom and autonomy. But deep down, you know that suppressing your yearnings will only lead to a life of regret.

Ideally, in this journey of self-discovery, you refuse to judge or reject your desires. You acknowledge the complexity of your emotions and the conflicting pulls you feel. It’s not an easy path, but you refuse to settle for a life of fear and dishonesty.

So, you navigate the maze of emotions, searching for a way to honor your yearnings while staying true to your responsibilities. It’s an ongoing journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. Does any of this sound familiar to you?  If so, I have something to tell you: The idea propagated by society that engaging in an affair, quitting a job without notice, or choosing to dine out instead of cooking at home reflects a person’s generosity, thoughtfulness, and commitment… it’s complete and utter bullshit.

The truth is, affairs are not uncommon. They are not confined to the pages of scandalous novels or hidden in the shadows of secret rendezvous. They are borne out of a longing for connection, an attempt to reignite the spark that has been dimmed by the weight of routine. It is a reflection of the human need for passion, for a taste of intensity that cuts through the ordinary.

Quitting a job without notice may be seen as an act of rebellion, but it is a declaration of autonomy, a desperate grasp for freedom from the suffocating grip of the mundane. It speaks to the yearning to pursue a life that aligns with our passions and purpose, rather than being shackled to the grind of unfulfilling work. It is an assertion of self-worth and a refusal to settle for a life devoid of meaning.

And let us not forget the simple act of dining out—a seemingly trivial pleasure that people often assume to be excessive or lazy. But in reality, it is an escape from the mundane routines of meal preparation, an opportunity to surrender control and nourish oneself both physically and emotionally.

These actions, though often stigmatized, are windows into the depths of our humanity. They reflect our collective desire for a life that transcends the boundaries of the mundane, pulsates with vitality, and holds the promise of extraordinary moments.

Wanting adventure and excitement does not mean we are broken. But finding the right balance between our free-spirited nature and the need for routine and structure can be tough.

How do we find freedom within the structure of our rules and routines? How do we honor our need for exploration while fulfilling our obligations?

At the core of my being lies a free spirit, always craving novelty and growth, yearning for a life filled with adventure. The mundane and monotonous have never held much appeal for me. However, I’ve come face to face with the challenges of reconciling my free-spirited nature with the structured expectations of the world; especially my relationships.

Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered the agonizing and conflicting emotions that arise when the desire for newness clashes with the demands of long-term commitment. Staying in a job for more than a few years becomes a struggle as the itch for something new grows stronger. 

Business ventures and creative endeavors lose their luster all too quickly, leaving me longing for the next exciting pursuit. 

And in the realm of relationships, the exclusivity that is often expected feels like a weight that I am never sure I can carry. Hi, commitment issues, nice to meet you.

Embracing Authentic Liberation

This ongoing battle has sparked a relentless quest within me to seek and understand my truth. It has become clear that conforming to the conventional norms and expectations imposed by society will never satisfy the yearnings of my soul.

It may seem like a straightforward process to learn and embrace who you are.  But when you confront the parts of yourself that have been labeled as unlovable, flawed, and worthy of rejection and abandonment; it’s painful and terrifying. But I saw no other sustainable path.

During this excruciating process (and trust me, it was fucking excruciating), I discovered that my path to liberation lay in my unwavering commitment to honesty, both with myself and my partners. It became evident that I couldn’t find contentment within the confines of society’s conventional understanding of how life should be lived.

However, I also recognized the practical realities of life—bills need to be paid, and the experience of being in a loving partnership is something I cherish. So, I embarked on a journey to find a way to carve out my freedom within the structures that surround me.

Seeking Balance and Liberation

In my journey, I’ve discovered that balance is the key to unlocking a harmonious coexistence between my free-spirited nature and the demands of structure.

For my work, I’ve learned that this free spirit of mine likes a mix of stability and uncertainty. And both are necessary for my sanity. I’ve structured my work so that some days call for strategic thinking and creative exploration, while others require mundane and routine responsibilities. 

Similarly, in relationships, I’ve found that integrating the parts of me that yearn for newness and adventure with the parts that seek stability and security is essential for my fulfillment.

Finding a balance between our adventurous spirits and the rules of structure is a hard journey. It’s a self-discovery process of digging deep inside ourselves, facing challenges, and finding creative ways to bring together our conflicting desires.

The Lesson from Yoga: Finding Freedom Within Yoga

The practice of yoga played a pivotal role in my quest for balance. 

When I started practicing yoga, I initially followed the instructor’s guidance, adhering to the prescribed movements and breaths without deviation. It was within this structured framework that something remarkable occurred. My body began to communicate with me, urging me to listen and respond in ways that felt authentic and true. Even if it didn’t match the direction of my instructor, or the movement of my classmates.

While I still honored the foundational elements of yoga, I started to use the poses I had learned in my own way and time, guided by the intuitive wisdom of my body. It was no longer about merely conforming to a specific shape or doing things “right.” Instead, my focus shifted towards actively listening to what my body needed in each moment. 

This experience taught me a valuable lesson that extends beyond the realm of yoga. It showed me that within any structured framework, be it a career or relationship, there is room for personal interpretation and self-discovery if we allow it. It’s about finding that delicate balance between honoring boundaries and routines and allowing our unique expression to shine through.

Through yoga, I learned that freedom is not found in rebellion against structure, but rather in embracing and reshaping it according to our authentic selves. It is a practice of finding harmony between the external structure and our internal desires.

Dig deep and acknowledge your true desires, needs, and dreams that you might have ignored. What are some things you’ve always wanted but haven’t pursued? How does it feel to admit these to yourself?

Talk openly with yourself and others about what you really want, even if it goes against expectations. Who can you trust to have non-judgmental conversations with? How can you create a safe space to share your true thoughts and feelings?

Work together with others involved to find ways to respect the existing structures while also meeting your needs. What compromises or adjustments can you make to honor both your individuality and your commitments? How can you find solutions that allow you to be true to yourself?

Step out of your comfort zone and do things that challenge the norm and align with your authentic self. What specific steps can you take to break free from restrictions? How can you build the courage to face any discomfort that may come up?

Accept that the process might be uncertain and uncomfortable. How can you be kind to yourself and stay patient during this transformative journey? What practices or support can help you stay on track and take care of yourself along the way?
